Oman plans to install offshore wind power farms in Arabian Sea

Oman is reportedly planning to set up offshore wind power farms in the Arabian Sea. The plan will complement the country's aim towards installing and increasing high power generation capacity from renewable resources.
According to H E Salim al Aufi, Oman's undersecretary in the Ministry of Oil & Gas, the country has been intending for a long time to take up offshore wind farms projects and is expected to announce the settlement of the plan along with other announcements within this year.
At an event conducted in Muscat, Mr. Aufi spoke about how crucial it is for the country is focus on comprehending onshore wind speeds across southern Oman. The sultanate will be conducting a study on how offshore wind speeds would help generate high energy. He further added that suitable locations will be identified to improve wind power efficiency with using this big data.
Estimates have revealed that nearly 10 meters per second average wind speeds, at the height of 100 meters, have been observed at certain near-shore areas in the Omani waters, rivalling the wind speed observations in the North Sea.
Sources familiar with the matter reported that Oman is aiming for renewables to provide 30 percent of the energy mix by 2030, which is around 4.8 GW. At present, the country is tendering for solar energy of 1.7 GW and procurement of another 2.6 GW to be added in the pipeline. Development of a large-scale wind farm was first observed in the Gulf Corporation Council in 2019. A renewable energy developer, Masdar, built 13 3.8-MW GE turbines that aided the installation of the 50MW Dhofar wind farm.
The 2019 International Energy Agency report showed an estimation that offshore wind with a current installed base of 25GW will proliferate 15-fold to reach nearly 340-GW in 2040, spearheading the transition to a decarbonized energy system worldwide. A World Bank study in 2019 also suggested that worldwide fleet expansions could exceed over 3TW, owing to emerging plays alone, in years ahead.
