AMD will fit Frontier with custom AMD EPYC CPUs which will be developed upon "future Zen Core high-performance architecture". Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Inc. has reportedly announced to partner with American supercomputer manufacturer Cray Inc. to build the fastest supercomputer in the world by the year 2021. Frontier - fastest supercomputer - will be launched online in the year 2021 in the U.S. It will be equipped with Radeon Instinct GPUs and AMD EPYCZen 2 CPUs.These will total the compute performance of 1.5 exaflops, pipping the Intel Xe-powered Aurora system unveiled earlier this year by half a big ol' flop. Reportedly, the deal has been valued at around $600 million. Cray will look after the server infrastructure and provide its Slingshot and Shasta supercomputer technologies. The machine will require 90 miles of wiring within its footprint of 7,300-square-foot. The red team will take care of delivering on the system's compute-friendly silicon. AMD will fit Frontier with custom AMD EPYC CPUs which will be developed upon "future Zen Core high-performance architecture". Every CPU will pack up into a single node together with 4 custom Radeon Instinct GPUs, each fitted with memory of high-bandwidth. The Infinity Fabric interconnect of the company will be used to weave each node together. AMD has been touting gigantic AI power with the machine, a major focus of many modern-day supercomputers. The machine will be delivered to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in the year 2021 to launch at the Department of Energy's discretion. The supercomputer will be generally used for modeling subatomic structures, simulating weather, and prying deeper into human understandings of physics. Forrest Norrod, GM and Senior VP, AMD Datacenter and Embedded Systems Group, reportedly stated that the company is proud to collaborate with ORNL and Cray to deliver the world's most powerful supercomputer. Custom CPU and GPU technology will be featured in Frontier from AMD and it will represent the newest accomplishment on long record of technology innovations which AMD has contributed to the Department of Energy exascale programs, he further added.
