Fortanix Inc. has recently unveiled the new Fortanix Legacy HSM (hardware security modules) Replacement program. This free trial program will enable partners to deliver a migration path to customers from their legacy HSMs. It also has announced a new extension to its Fortanix SDKMS (Self-Defending Key Management Service).
The Fortanix HSM Gateway extension integrates databases and cloud applications with legacy on-premise hardware security modules. This enables data security optimization for public cloud, on-premises, & hybrid cloud environments. The new program offers free licenses to those purchasing Fortanix Self-Defending KMS licenses. This will enable customers to gradually migrate to the Fortanix HSM gateway as well as address the security needs.
According to Faiyaz Shahpurwala, Fortanix’s chief product officer, several enterprise customers are facing complexities while reproducing and migrating the legacy HSMs & key management infrastructure to the cloud. The Fortanix HSM Gateway has added a new critical capability to Fortanix SDKMS that offers a consistent management & application interface for hybrid, on-premises, & public cloud workloads.
Fortanix Self-Defending KMS, introduced by the company in 2017, offers the runtime encryption technology to safeguard data and applications while in use. It also protects sensitive data during runtime by adopting Intel SGX (Software Guard Extensions). The company has reportedly stated that the new extension offers several business benefits such as reducing management costs, accelerating cloud migration, and simplifying data security. The customer-driven extension will also meet the challenges that are associated with replacing, migrating, and integrating the existing HSMs for the on-premise workloads. HSMs customers can make their keys accessible and manageable through Fortanix by connecting their legacy to Fortanix HSM Gateway.
Vishal Gupta, Fortinix’s product management leader of cloud & cybersecurity, has reportedly stated that the existing HSM securely stores the key, while on-premises and cloud databases and applications obtain a single source of the cryptographic services and the security teams obtain a pane of glass to audit and manage.
