Google Pay to provide details of open local stores in COVID-19 lockdown

With strict regulations regarding nationwide lockdown and social distancing practices, digital payment methods have gained unprecedented demand. Consequently, Google Pay has emerged as an important platform to provide vital information regarding the coronavirus pandemic.

In a bid to help users identify local stores that are selling essential goods such as groceries amid the nationwide lockdown, Google India recently confirmed Google Pay’s launch of ‘Nearby Spot’ in major cities across India including Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Bengaluru.

Reportedly, the technology giant unveiled the COVID-19 Nearby Spot that provides complete information related to the virus outbreak issued by government officials and other recognized authorities.

Notably, the platform also allows the users to donate funds to the PM-CARES Fund and to NGOs like Give India, SEEDS, Charities Aid Foundation and United Way that are constantly working towards the attainment of personal protective equipment (PPE) for medical professionals and relief for lockdown-impacted daily wage workers.

Notably, donations to PM-CARES on Google Pay platform had reached more than Rs. 105 crore and is growing at a rapid rate.

The COVIID-19 pandemic has distorted business and lives globally. With the primary aim to control the spread of the infection, the Government of India had announced a 21-day lockdown on March 24, which has been further extended.

Seemingly, the company has undertaken adequate measures in India to provide reliable and authoritative information to people and provide enhanced features across its products that can assist the citizens during the lockdown.

In a statement by Google, the company has enhanced its offerings across various platforms and is providing latest updates and health advice from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India and other international health authorities across YouTube, Maps, Search and the COVID-19 Spot on the Google Pay app.

Google has apparently joined hands with the Health Ministry to run a public service campaign to support information provided by the Health Ministry, like educational and video content featuring Amitabh Bachchan across Google Assistant, YouTube and Google Search.
