The United Kingdom is reportedly expected to terminate the adoption of Huawei technology for its 5G network by 2020, amid security concerns.
Several countries are reportedly making their transition from the 4G network to a more advanced and high speed 5G mobile network. This could reportedly provide an advantage for Huawei to spy and disrupt various communications during any dispute that may arise in the future. According to the Huawei Cyber Security Evaluation Center set up by the UK, there were some serious defects in the cyber-security competence and software technology of this company. In order to ensure adequate management of these defects, the UK is employing multiple 5G suppliers, so as not to rely on one technology company.
Boris Johnson, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, is planning for a major policy change due to the identification of risks posed by the China-based company by the GCHQ (Government Communications Headquarters). He had approved Huawei in January 2020 to play a limited role in the development of the 5G network in the UK.
This termination plan has happened along the heels of the United States designating ZTE Corporation and Huawei, the telecommunication companies in China, as national security threats. The US administration claims that these organizations have close ties with the Communist Party of China and military apparatus in China.
Sources familiar with the matter have stated that the United States has introduced a new sanction to limit Huawei’s reliance on the American intellectual property. The move has reportedly posed a severe impact on this Chinese company. Sources further added that officials are also making proposals to completely prevent the installation of Huawei equipment in the 5G network over a period of 6 months. Additionally, in recent months, the decision that enabled the Chinese company to play a limited role in the 5G network in Britain has led to the development of tension between Washington DC and London.
